Safety & Health Expo 2014

To celebrate the launch of Safety and Health Week I took the opportunity to hear the latest news and meet some new and familiar contacts at the Safety and Health Expo, held at ExCel this year for the first time.

The place was literally 'buzzing', so much so that at lunch time even ExCel mass catering facilities were struggling to keep up with demand. Standing in the long queue at Subway my thoughts turned to the Chilean Blue eagle I'd seen on one of the display stands - designed to rid buildings of pigeons and other pests.

Good health and safety practices are key if you want a sustainable business, but at that time sustenance was all I was after. Maybe today was the perfect day to start the 5:2 fast diet?

There were lots of educational sessions taking place in mini theatres with 'The Institute of Safety and Health (IOSH)' pulling some of the biggest crowds with its practical and informative workshops. It was refreshing to see organisations shedding negative pre-conceptions regarding occupational safety. And to see a new enthusiasm with which many were greeting the longer term benefits of investing intelligently in their employees.

Creating a safer and caring work environment for your employees results in happier and healthier staff. They'll be more engaged, efficient and productive.

Sustainable working lives = more sustainable businesses and success all round. But as for sustaining my 5:2 diet that wasn't so successful.
